Resisting Racism: A Required Diversity Training for AWF Clergy

It is oftentimes an eye-opening, embarrassing, and/or troubling moment when a person realizes they have offended someone with a racist comment or action. Situations like this are often the result of a lack of awareness.

In an effort to address and reduce the number of occurrences of unintentional and intentional racism within the Alabama-West Florida Conference, Bishop Graves is requiring all full-time appointed clergy and those part-time clergy whose schedules will allow to attend one of the three mandatory diversity trainings being offered throughout our Annual Conference in the month of September. At this training, clergy experts on this subject from outside of our Annual Conference will be equipping our clergy with the tools and knowledge needed to resist all forms of racism in their church and community.

“If we are going to move forward as a Church, in society and in our communities, we must all come to the table not just for conversation, but transformation. Transformation begins with each of us. It has been conversations with people from all walks of life that has changed me. I am still a work in progress and look forward to seeing each of you at one of these trainings.” – Bishop David Graves

Deadline to register for this required training is Friday, September 6, 2019.

For questions and concerns related to registration, please contact Sarah McWilliams at For questions or more information about the training event, contact Celeste Eubanks at

.5 continuing education units (CEUs) will be awarded to those who participate fully in the day.

USA Wesley Foundation Students Return to Campus

The University of South Alabama Wesley Foundation is looking for volunteers to provide dinner for Tuesday Night Worship. Each Tuesday we have dinner, worship and a lesson for our students. Dinner starts at 6 PM every Tuesday before worship, so food should be brought at 5:30. You may choose to make the food, you may buy something from the store, or you may order catering. All have been done in the past by different churches and organizations. Whatever food you want to bring is up to you; we’re grateful for it all! Sometimes people bring dessert as well but we have our own utensils and plates. We usually need food for about 30-40 people.Click here to find a list of all the available Tuesday nights for this school year.

Thank you so much for your interest in helping us serve our students!  If you have questions please contact Loren Pierce at or call 251-341-5184.

Game Changing Leadership

Balance in life and ministry is hard; especially as a pastor and the main financial leader in your congregation. We know every minute of your time is precious, so we condensed our Game Changing Leadership event into a one-day seminar where you will be surrounded by like-minded peers.

Game Changing Leadership is a one-day seminar focused on resourcing you with new tips and tools that can easily be put into place right away to foster a generous culture in your church, develop financial leadership skills, and improve your personal financial health.

Our goal is for our pastors’ personal well-being, for our congregations to thrive, and that the mission of the church be furthered.

Event Details:
• Cost: $20 (includes lunch, seminars, and resources)
• Speakers: Suzanne Krejcar (AWF Conference), Chris Stovall (Generis), Alan Wildes (Generis), and Terri Turner (UM Foundation)
• Locations: Thursday, September 5 at First United Methodist Crestview (FL) from 10am-2pm;
Friday, September 6 at First United Methodist Church Montgomery (AL) from 10am-2pm

Early Disaster Response Training (ERT)

Be prepared to respond to the next disaster. Early response training covers the basics of early disaster response, including roof tarping, cleaning out damaged homes, spiritual and emotional care, team protocols, and more. The purpose of the training is to prepare our United Methodist Volunteers to do good and do no harm.  Click here for a description of what well-trained ERT teams look like. Click here for "Seven Important things to know about Disaster Spiritual and Emotional Care."

Proper credentials are sometimes required for individuals and teams responding in the first few days after a disaster. Participants who successfully complete this training will receive those credentials, including an ERT badge.

Training sessions are open to all people ages 18+. All participants will complete a background check through UMCOR.  All participants must also complete Safe Sanctuary training. Click here to watch the video, and click here to access the verification form.

Upcoming training events in our conference may be found by clicking here.  To schedule a training for your church, contact Susan Hunt at 334-356-8014.
