United Methodist Continues Disaster Recovery Work in Lee County

While many people are preparing for Spring Break and the Lenten season, critical disaster relief work continues in Lee County. The afternoon of March 3, 2019, will forever be remembered as the day where lives were lost and, for those left standing, permanently changed. VOAD (Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster) reports that 199 homes were destroyed, 108 received major damage, and 251 incurred minor damage. In the midst of this devastation, The United Methodist Church continues to help lead the tornado relief work, which is primarily based out of the Montgomery-Opelika District and the Lee County churches.  Click here to read full story.

QuadW Missional Summer Internship 2019

QuadW Missional Internship is an 8 week, paid, summer internship for college-age young adults, 18-24.  $2000 stipend, housing and most meals included! We will have more than 100 interns serving on teams in 12 cities  across the US in the summer of 2019: Anniston, AL; Birmingham, AL; Columbus, OH; Dallas, TX; Elkhart, IN; Kansas City KS; Mobile, AL; Pine Bluff, AR; Portland, OR; Reading, PA; Riverton, WY; San Diego, CA

The QuadW Missional Internship is aimed at helping interns participate deeply in God's mission in a particular context and to be an experience that helps them to discern God's call on their lives.  Interns live in Christian community and serve alongside local UM churches and other ministry partners, working to meet the needs of marginalized and at-risk populations in those communities.

Annual Conference 2019

The annual conference planning team, directed by Bishop David Graves, is pleased to announce that this year's missional giving recipient for the 2019 Annual Conference special offering is Teaming with Tanzania.

Many of you collect special offerings during your worship services leading up to conference. Click here to access a bulletin insert that will help explain the impact this ministry has on our conference and global connection. The insert is setup so that you may print this file on a single sheet of paper, front and back, and then trim to have two inserts per page. A promotional video is also available by clicking here. We invite you to show this video during your worship services. To learn more about this partnership, click here

We encourage you to give generously to this ministry that has made a significant impact in Tanzania. This offering will be collected at the opening worship service on Sunday, June 2, 2019, at Frazer Memorial United Methodist Church.

Also, we are asking churches to bring to Annual Conference UMCOR kits and individual bulk supplies for the hygiene and school kits. The Mobile District has been asked to bring:

Paper for the school kits

  •  Loose-leaf paper, 100 or 200 sheet packs, wide or college ruled
  •  One-subject notebooks (No composition books or 3 or 5-subject notebooks)

Soap for the hygiene kits

  • Bath-size soap - 3 oz. and larger sizes only - (No Ivory or Jergens soap due to moisture content)

Completed cleaning buckets, school kits, and hygiene kits are also welcome. Click here to find more information.

UMCOR Sunday (formerly One Great Hour of Sharing) is March 31

For more than 50 years, United Methodist congregations have been taking part in a special UMCOR Sunday offering, laying the foundation for UMCOR’s ministry of relief and hope.

Donations UMCOR receives through this offering, along with other undesignated gifts made throughout the year, cover our costs of doing business. Gifts like yours make it possible for UMCOR to use 100% of all other contributions on the projects our donors specify, instead of on administrative or fundraising costs.

UMCOR does not receive United Methodist World Service or apportionment funds, so without your offerings, UMCOR would not exist.

Because we keep operating costs under 10% of our total budget, undesignated gifts may actually exceed UMCOR’s administrative needs. When that happens, your support is channeled to under-funded programs, where they’re most needed. They also may be used to allow UMCOR to respond to disasters immediately after an event and before funds can be raised.

Most congregations celebrate UMCOR Sunday on the fourth Sunday of Lent. If this conflicts with other events, local churches are encouraged to choose other dates that work for them. Resources such as bulletin inserts, posters, and more are available here.

Because of your donation today, we're ready to respond in times of crisis.
