Mobile District Lay Leader Featured in USA Today

On April 4th our country will be recognizing the 50th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King's assassination and the great impact of his life and death.  Clara Ester, our District Lay Leader, was a witness to this event and was recently approached by USA Today for an interview.  You may read this moving account of the events leading up to and during this tragic event and also the impact that it had on Clara's life by clicking here.

Local United Methodist Women Featured in response Magazine

response magazine by Michelle Bearden

Vera Moore calls herself a “Methodist by choice.” She wasn’t born into the church. Though she missed out on the very front end of her life, she certainly made up for lost time.

“It was a good fit,” she says of joining First United Methodist Church of Bayou La Batre in 1957, shortly after she, her husband and their two young children moved to the Alabama fishing village from her home state of Virginia. “My sister was a Methodist, and she appreciated the freedom.”  Click here to read entire article......

response, an award-winning publication, is the official magazine of United Methodist Women and is published by the national office. Each issue will touch your heart, stir your soul, and challenge your mind. Topics and issues cover spiritual growth, mission outreach and reports on our local, national and international work.  Click here to subscribe for yourself or as a gift.

Lake Junaluska Summer Youth Events

Registration is open for Summer Youth Events at Lake Junaluska. The events are an incredible opportunity for youth to grow in faith, friendship and community, all while surrounded by the beauty of the Western North Carolina mountains.

The events are planned with feedback from a youth ministry advisory team of United Methodist clergy and laity, and directed by Rev. Mitzi Johnson, an ordained elder in The United Methodist Church. Each event is steeped in Wesleyan theology and offers morning and evening sessions with high energy worship, guest preachers and optional mission projects.

During each three or four-day event, youth have afternoons free to explore the area. Lake Junaluska has partnered with Asheville Youth Mission, which allows groups the option to do an off-site mission project in the Asheville area for a nominal fee. Youth can also go ziplining or rafting, or simply stay on property and enjoy paddle boarding, slip-and-slide kickball or other recreation at Lake Junaluska.

Lake Junaluska recently received nearly $400,000 in charitable gifts to upgrade youth housing! Renovations begin this spring to Mountainview and the Lake Junaluska Apartments, two of the buildings where youth most often stay.

Events are open to church youth groups of all sizes, grades 6-12.  If you register before April 11, you can save $100 for your group!

Means of Grace | Day Apart for Spiritual Formation (Fourth Session)

Means of Grace | Day Apart for Spiritual Formation is a two year program which offers a day apart every quarter where the participants will learn about John Wesley’s means of grace and their potential for spiritual transformation. The leadership team for this program has heard the call to co-labor with God and the local church in making of disciples for the transformation of the world. The first day apart will be an Introduction to the Means of Grace, the next six days apart will cover each of the six means of grace, and the final day apart of the two year program will be Celebrating the Means of Grace. Our hope is that each participant will not only learn about each of the means of grace or spiritual disciplines but will also experience them and will be able to implement them into their daily lives. Each day apart will be held at Blue Lake begin at 9:00 a.m. and end at 4:00 p.m. and will offer time for worship, learning, silence, fellowship, sharing a meal, and a chance to actually experience what is being taught.

Click here for more information about the fourth session coming up on May 19th.
