We are Thankful for You!

Communities of Transformation could not function without our volunteers! We are thankful for meal coordinators, trainers, child-care providers, clergy members, host churches, and friends. Last year we had nearly 500 volunteers! We are featuring a few of our wonderful volunteers from COT Eufaula this month. Thank you for your faithfulness!

Lou Martin volunteers to teach the Awaken classes at COT Eufuala.  She is fully committed to facilitating these weekly lessons.  She also serves as a faithful member of the Leadership Team. Site coordinator Beverly Brown says, "Whenever I have called on her to help in any situation, she is always available.  She meets with participants to make up classes, picks up participants and their children when needed, provides meals for our CoT meetings, mentors me when I ask for advice, and is a strong community advocate for our organization.  She also keeps CoT as a focus in her church, First United Methodist Church."

Joann Gamble, pictured on the right, is a faithful member of the Leadership Team at COT Eufaula.  Beverly is thankful for Joann's dependability; "When I have asked her for assistance, she has NEVER told me she was unable to help.  She has picked up participants and their children on many, many occasions.  She also shows a genuine interest in all the participants and all their children.  She is one of the first to offer help in the kitchen with serving and cleaning up.  There were many nights that I would have been lost without her stepping up and overseeing our COT kitchen.  She, along with other volunteers from her church, Rocky Mount Baptist Church, have frequently provided meals for our COT meetings."

Stella Matherne, pictured left, faithfully serves as official greeter at COT Eufaula. Her meal is always prepared "to go" because she goes from table to table talking to both participants and volunteers.  "Miss Stella," as she is affectionately called, also assists the children during mealtimes, so moms can enjoy some adult conversation. During meeting time Stella volunteers with the children, teaching them how to share their "Good News" just as the adults do. After this time of sharing, Stella uses reading and play time as a means for teaching life's lessons.

Brenda Parker, pictured on the far right, gives freely of her time to locate and organize members of the Eufaula community who are willing to provide meals for COT meetings.  Each week she makes a sign, so everyone knows who has provided the meal for the week.  She also makes it a priority to write each person a thank-you note.  Even when she had to miss meetings after recovering from surgery, she made sure that each COT meeting had meals during her absence.

What Happens When I Give?

Every time you give to Communities of Transformation, your community improves.  Last year we saw nearly 150 participants work toward a more stable future with clear goals for themselves. That translates to 150 families who are moving toward self-sufficiency and away from instability, isolation, and dependence.

Montgomery participant LaQueta Savage says Communities of Transformation helps her make community connections, and she believes that through participation in COT Montgomery can become stronger.

Leticia Swopes and her daughter Angel are both participants in Mobile. Leticia has been dedicated and passionate since she joined COT. She is a great support to our teen moms. Leticia is one of our newest leadership team members who will start in 2018. Angel is excited to use what she learns to accomplish the goals she has set for herself.

This holiday season we have an exciting new way for you to give. For the first time ever, we have been selected to participate in the River Region Alternative Gift Fair on the Cloverdale campus of Huntingdon College!

What is an alternative gift? It is a charitable contribution which funds a very specific need in our community through one of the Fair’s 32 participating nonprofit groups. Examples include medical supplies, food, children's books, and construction materials. Why give someone another pair of socks, the thinking goes, when you can honor them and at the same time help one of our neighbors in need? This year, there are 128 alternative gifts available, including over twenty at the $5 level; click here to see a PDF listing them.

The 2017 Gift Fair will be held Saturday, December 2nd from 9:00 a. m. to 12:00 noon, at Huntingdon College's Cloverdale Campus, 1125 East Fairview Avenue in Montgomery (the old Cloverdale Junior High School). After Thanksgiving, online shopping will also available until 11:59 p. m. on Tuesday, December 5th---with blank gift cards and envelopes mailed to online shoppers on Thursday, December 7th for a nominal shipping fee.

Thank you for your faithful support of Communities of Transformation!
