United in Mission- Ecuador 2020

The Mobile District is putting together it’s second annual mission team traveling to Quito, Ecuador on July 4-13, 2020.  The total cost will be $1850.  This includes flights in/out of New Orleans, meals, hotel, excursions, and a team t-shirt.  A $100 deposit is due into the District Office by March 30.  Several fundraisers are already in the works to help offset some of the cost.  This is an excellent opportunity to grow and serve together as United Methodists!!  If you are interested and would like more information, we will be having an informational meeting on March 15th at 3:00 pm at the Mobile District Office.  Contact Jennifer Baumgarten for more information at or message me on Facebook.

Dumas Wesley Annual Blue Lake Camp Experience

It’s that time again! We are excited for our children to experience Mother Nature at her finest at the United Methodist Church’s Blue Lake Camp Discovery in Andalusia, Alabama. We are expecting around 25 children to attend and are delighted that our youth will have a chance to enjoy nature and outdoor challenges as well as worship, authentic relationships and memorable learning experiences.

The cost of camp this year is $150.00 per child and we hope you will prayerfully consider a gift to help underwrite this program. Your campership will allow our disadvantaged children to take a break from the challenges of everyday life and, for some, enjoy their first camp experience!

It is our fervent desire that no child is denied a camp experience due to financial lack. Your support is important to us. Your prayers are treasured. Your help is greatly appreciated in whatever way it is given. Please consider sending your donation by July 10, 2020 to:  Dumas Wesley Community Center, 126 Mobile St., Mobile, AL 36607.  For more information contact Steffani Gonzales at or (251) 479-0649.

Student Outreach Training and Work Opportunities

To be successful, many of our AWF ministries need help from youth and young adults. There are various opportunities throughout the year to serve in mission while growing closer to Christ. Click on the links below to find more information about each.

Reasons to Believe Seminar at Government Street UMC

Eleanor Toland and the United Methodist Inner City Mission

Written by Terri Turner

The Mobile United Methodist Inner City Mission is truly being the hands and feet of Christ by serving an entire neighborhood with love and support for the children and others living in poverty.  Started in the mid-1960's as an outreach of Oakdale UMC under the direction of Rev. Fred Toland, the mission originally sought to provide activities and tutoring for the children in this neighborhood.  As the neighborhood transitioned over the years, the Oakdale UMC closed around the the mid-1970's and Rev. Toland and his wife Eleanor decided to stay on working at the mission.  As Eleanor tells, "I hadn't planned on working at the Mission but in 1978 Fred lost his secretary so I agreed to go in and help him in the office temporarily."  Eleanor has been at the Mission ever since.

When asked about the success of the Mission, Rev. Algood is quick to point out that the vision and passion for this work started with Fred and Eleanor Toland. He stated, "Now Eleanor is the heart and soul of this mission.  She has a love and compassion for those people we serve. This work requires lots of multi-tasking and wisdom in difficult situations.  She is able to handle that and share God's unconditional love!"  Rev. Algood is not the only person inspired by Eleanor's commitment.  Recently the United Methodist Foundation was contacted by a donor who wanted to anonymously honor Eleanor by setting up an insurance funded trust, The Eleanor Toland Inner City Mission Trust, which will provide a perpetual source of income to be used by the Mission.  The UM Foundation provided the trust documentation and walked the donor through the process.  It was complete within a mater of weeks and will be primarily funded at the donor's death but accepts donations from others.
