Thank You From Open Doors Thrift Stores

Thank you to everyone who volunteered at Open Doors stores (both Hwy 90 and Moffett Road sites) as part of the 2nd Annual Love in Action District Mission event. Over 50 volunteers from many different congregations came to help. This number of people, volunteering for three hours each, makes a huge difference for both stores. Volunteering, no matter your ability or amount of time, immediately pays off! The quickness of getting new items priced and out for sale keeps our customers loyal and coming back for more.

Please help us keep up the momentum. If individuals, Sunday school classes, supper clubs etc., would like to volunteer, please call the store - 661-5661 and ask for Audrey. Thank you Mobile District for all your support over these last six years!

Summer Youth Program Offered by Auburn Wesley Foundation

The Auburn Wesley Foundation has sent out 25 summers of youth caravan teams in ministry and we look forward to this summer!  The Youth Caravan is a team of Christian young adults on a summer mission geared toward youth ministry.   This team will be prepared to spend from three to five days with your youth, alongside your adult volunteers.  Generally, the team will deliver an approximately two hour program each day, including worship, games, and small group time.  The team is also available for activities planned by you during the rest of the day.  Often churches will plan mission and/or fun activities earlier in the day and have the YC programming in the evening.  Youth Caravan always strives to design programs that present the Scriptures in an exciting manner, subtly helping the youth to realize God’s awesome presence in their lives.

May is Mental Health Month

Mental Health Month was created over 50 years ago to raise awareness about mental health conditions and the importance of mental wellness for all by Mental Health America. There are now designated times in May for groups to raise awareness and advocate for improvements in research, prevention and treatment on specific mental health issues.

Research indicates people who are struggling with thoughts of suicide are increasingly turning to faith leaders for help and support, even before they will seek care from mental health professionals. Faith leaders play a key role in suicide prevention and postvention care. To better equip leaders of all faiths with life-saving skills to prevent suicide, the National Action Alliance for Suicide Prevention (Action Alliance) and its Faith Communities Task Force, recently released the resource Suicide Prevention Competencies for Faith Leaders: Supporting Life Before, During, and After a Suicidal Crisis.

This new resource aims to provide faith leaders with feasible, practical, research-based actions they can adopt immediately to help save lives and restore hope in faith communities nationwide. The competencies, informed by leaders from diverse faith communities and experts in the suicide prevention field, help to integrate and coordinate suicide prevention across sectors and settings, like faith-based organizations and places of worship, a goal of the Action Alliance’s National Strategy for Suicide Prevention.

Look for community events to highlight mental health issues affecting children, adolescents, adults and older adults. This is an opportunity to educate your faith community about mental illness and help them become caring congregations for persons with a mental illness and their families.
