An Update From The Open Doors Thrift Store

The Open Doors Thrift Store continues to benefit from the support of the Mobile District and the community. Last year was our best year so far and 2018 has started off with every indication of surpassing 2017! Thank you for your donations and for the time many of you have given in volunteer hours. Your efforts allowed us to give $133,500 in 2017 to local missions. The ministries that applied for and received distributions last year were: Dumas Wesley Community Center, United Methodist Mobile Inner City Mission, University of South Alabama Wesley Foundation, United Methodist Children's Home's Babies First Program , West Wilmer United Methodist Mission Church, St. John United Methodist Church Hispanic Ministries, Metro Jail Ministries and Communities of Transformation.

Please continue to bring your donations and tell your neighbors and friends about the good work that we do to serve people right here in our communities! We accept donations at the store (4125 Government Blvd) during any of our regular business hours. We are also happy to pick up furniture, appliances and larger items.  PLEASE NOTE: our pick up schedule is very busy. If possible, please try to give us a three to five day notice to pick up these items.

Our store hours are:  Monday - Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Saturday, 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Open Doors remains committed to primarily operating with volunteer help. We have volunteer opportunities for individuals, Sunday school classes, civic groups, supper clubs, youth groups, etc. Please call the store at 661-5661 to schedule a time to serve soon!

Thank you again for supporting our Missions through The Open Doors Thrift Store.

Fountain of Love Offering Focuses On Mother’s Day

As we approach Mother’s Day, it is our hope that your church will celebrate mothers through the taking of a Mother’s Day Offering for the Fountain of Love. The Fountain of Love Fund provides financial assistance to older adults living in a Methodist Home retirement community who find that they can no longer pay for their entire care Because of the support of the Alabama-West Florida Conference and its churches, no resident has ever been asked to leave a Methodist Home due to their inability to pay.

Free offering materials, including a flyer with a special support letter from Bishop David Graves, are available for ordering now on our website here. Though our emphasis is on Mother’s Day, offerings and speaker requests are honored throughout the year. It is through the Fountain of Love Fund that needy residents of a Methodist Homes are able to continue living in the place that they call “home.”

Last year the Fountain of Love awarded more than $411,000 to residents in need. A large part of this program’s success is because of the churches that faithfully participate in a Fountain of Love Offering. Thank you, in advance, for making the Fountain of Love Offering a priority in your church.

To order the FREE Fountain of Love Offering materials for your church online, visit www.methodisthomes.org/FountainOfLovePortal.html, and complete the form!  For more information about the Fountain of Love or Methodist Homes, explore our website at www.methodisthomes.org, or call 205-951-2442.

The Cycling Adventure of a Lifetime!

You get serious bragging rights of cycling across Alabama! And, your sacrifice will result in several families receiving vital home repairs. It’s a win, win!

Cycle of Service is a main fundraising event for Alabama Rural Ministry. It is an intense, fun, 3 day bike ride that helps families with low income receive vital repairs and works to end substandard housing in rural Alabama. The funds gained from cyclists’ sponsors provide home repair assistance to families in Lee, Macon, and Sumter counties making homes warm, safe, and dry through volunteers. It also helps ARM host children’s summer camps with a goal to help kids break cycles of generational poverty.

Registration is open till April 9th. There is even an option for cycling on a stationary bike, spin bike, or in your community. There really is something for everyone!

Rise Against Hunger Meal Packing Postponed Until May

St. Mark UMC's Annual March for Missions program this year was to raise money for Rise Against Hunger. We have reached our monetary goal but were asked by the organization to postpone our meal packing event. It will now be held on Saturday, May 19th at 2 PM in the Malone Center Gym at St. Mark Mobile. We would love other congregations, businesses and/or individuals to join with us as we pack over 10,000 meals for this great cause... it should be lots of fun too! Click here to find the Rise Against Hunger website for more information.
