Dumas Wesley Community Center 115th Anniversary Fundraiser

The Dumas Wesley Community Center was founded in 1903 by the United Methodist Women and has been serving the community for 115 years. Dumas Wesley originally started its mission work as a day care to serve men and women working in the cotton mills of Crichton, Alabama. Today, Dumas Wesley offers over a dozen programs and services for the working poor and the homeless. Last year, 266,715 services were provided for 1,973 low-income families, vulnerable seniors, at-risk youth and homeless families.  Click here to learn more about our 115 Anniversary Fundraiser and help us reach our goal!   All contributions up to $15,000 will be matched by an anonymous donor at the end of the year!

Hurricane Florence Update

As of today, September 24, we have no new information from UMCOR or the Carolina Conferences about sending teams or supplies. Waters have yet to fully recede in many areas, and roads are still closed because of high water or roads being washed away. We will collect UMCOR relief kits at various locations throughout the conference soon. Watch this site for a list of locations. Financial contributions are always appropriate. Send your contributions to the conference fiscal office, made payable to AWFC, to 4719 Woodmere Blvd, Montgomery, AL 36106. Please do not self-deploy to the affected areas. If you want to respond in person, help is still needed in TexasLouisiana, and Florida from last year's storms.

Seminar on Mental Health

43.8 million adults experience mental illness in a given year. That means 1 in 5 adults in America experience a mental illness, and nearly 1 in 25 adults in America live with a serious mental illness. Yet nearly 60% of adults with a mental illness didn't receive mental health services in the previous year.

Chances are good that several of your church members experience mental illness themselves or have family members who do. The Church is very good about reaching out to people with cancer, surgeries, and other visible health conditions. But how is the Church reaching out to those with mental illness and helping them to feel welcome?

There will be a seminar on Mental Health held at The Vision Center at 4807 Princeton Drive, Mobile, AL on October 22, 2018, beginning at 6 PM.  During this time together we will learn more about mental illness and how the church can be better prepared to welcome and care for those with mental illness.  An optional dinner will be available for $10 beginning at 5:15. You must register for the meal by October 18. Click here to register.

This event is sponsored by the Conference Board of Church and Society.  For additional statistics on mental health, click here.

ERT Training at West Side UMC

The Mobile District needs to be prepared for the next disaster.  Please consider being a part of a local Early Response Team (ERT) training event that will help us reach that goal! ERT training covers the essentials of early disaster response, including roof tarping, cleaning out damaged homes, spiritual and emotional care, team protocols, and much more. You will receive a badge to join future emergency response teams.  This training is open to all people age 18 and over.

John Swanson will lead the training at West Side UMC on Saturday, September 29, 2018, from 8 am to 3 pm.  The cost of the event is $10 to cover lunch. Please register by September 20. To register, email Kay Lauber at wsumc.ofc@att.net or call 251-478-3721.

Bishop Graves to hold Town Hall Meeting

The district town hall meetings are part of an ongoing conversation concerning The Commission on A Way Forward and the called General Conference scheduled for February of 2019. The purpose of these gatherings is to bring clarity and answer questions around the three proposed plans coming from The Commission on A Way Forward to the 2019 General Conference. All interested United Methodists, both lay and clergy, are invited to attend a town hall meeting in their district.  He will hold the Mobile District Town Hall Meeting at Dauphin Way UMC on Sunday, October 14th at 3pm.
