Educated, Empowered, Enriched

“The righteous cry out, and the Lord hears, and delivers them from all their troubles. The Lord is near the brokenhearted; He saves those crushed in spirit.” Psalm 34:17-18

(Jennifer Hope Knox) - The aforementioned Bible verse is the heart song of the individuals who have participated in and have been transformed by the Christian services of the Dumas Wesley Community Center in Mobile, AL. Sybil H. Smith Family Village (SHSFV), the center’s transitional housing program, gives its participants the opportunity to be educated, empowered, and enriched. SHSFV was founded in 1999 and provides 24-month housing for families experiencing homelessness. It also provides individualized case management, life skill classes, and the tools necessary for achieving self-sufficiency/permanent housing. To date, this program has served 850 total individuals of which 238 have been families.

Among those served was a sweet lady and child of God by the name of Carolyn Stone, pictured above. As do many others who have been touched by this program and its demonstration of being the hands and feet of Christ, Carolyn has a testimony to share:

“I found myself at the bottom and going nowhere…until this place. Not only did you give me back my life, but you also gave me back my kids and their belief in me. You gave me a chance to be their mom again and to be able to give them stability. I cannot express how much this program has changed my life because it continues to change every day…for the better. My kids smile now, they laugh and they trust…ALL because of you.”

And that is only a single section of her appreciation letter to SHSFV! Wow. All praise be to God! Carolyn’s story is indeed a story of hope when all seemed lost, and of light in the darkest of times. That Hope and that Light is our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Thank you Dumas Wesley Community Center for advancing hope in Christ’s name! You epitomize what a little love and faith can truly do: It can move mountains!
