Ecuador Disaster Response

On April 16, an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.8 struck the coast of of Ecuador. Widespread damage occurred, over 650 people died, and many more were injured.

Our own Global Ministries missionary Rev. Dan Godwin is serving in Ecuador. He and his family are safe. Visit Dan's facebook page at this link to learn more about the situation there, and how you can help:
https://www.facebook.com/EchoesfromEcuador.
Or email him at dgodwin@umcmission.org.

We always recommend giving through UMCOR when a disaster strikes. You can rest assured that 100% of your giving to UMCOR goes directly to disaster response. Click here to donate. Click here to read an article from the bishop in Ecuador.

Ecuador Mission Trip

If your church isn't large enough to put together its own mission team, but you want to experience an international mission trip, then this opportunity is for you!

Rev. Rob West of Clanton First UMC is pulling together a mission team open for all. The team will travel to Santo Domingo, Ecuador, October 29-November 5, 2016. The cost will be approximately $2,000. The team will work with the Methodist Church in the area, and with Dan and Lisa Godwin.

For more information, contact Rev. West at 205-294-9325 or 205-755-0490, or rob@clantonfumc.org.

Bring UMCOR Relief Kits to Annual Conference

At annual conference in June 2016, we will again collect UMCOR relief kits. UMCOR is especially requesting health kits and school kits. Relief supply kits help provide care for the most vulnerable people during times of crisis. UMCOR kits are distributed globally, and help sustain everyday life for people who lack ready access to essential supplies.

Bring/send your kits to annual conference to the truck in the parking lot at Frazer, and Coleman American will ship the kits and supplies on to the Sager Brown depot in Baldwin, Louisiana.

Visit www.awfumc.org/reliefkits for more details. Click here to see the flier with kit instructions.

Zika Virus - what about mission trips?

There have been numerous stories in the news recently regarding the Zika virus and how it is affecting people - especially unborn children - in countries in Latin America. What does this mean for any mission trips you have planned to those countries?

The United Methodist Volunteers In Mission office has provided some information and recommendations concerning this issue at their website, including recommending carrying a Zika Virus Prevention Kit. Click here to read more.

The UMVIM recommendation is to continue with your travel plans. However, before you travel, understand the risks, plan ahead with UMVIM insurance, and follow all instructions regarding prevention. Click here for the CDC's prevention recommendations. For women trying to conceive, it is recommended they not go to these affected areas (including men, who can transmit the disease to their partner). Please also consult your physician before traveling to these areas.

Most people who are affected by the Zika virus won't even know they have it. The illness is usually mild with symptoms lasting for several days to a week. The most common symptoms are fever, rash, joint pain and red eyes.

For more information, please contact Paulette West at paulette_west@umvim.org or 205-453-9480.
